Position Information
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Softball coaching experience at the collegiate level.
Experience with NCAA Rules and Regulations.
Excellent organizational, communication and leadership skills.
Perform all duties in accordance with NCAA , Conference and University rules, regulations, ordinances, polices, procedures and guidelines.
A valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable to the university are required.
Desired Qualifications
Offensive/Hitting coaching experience.
Demonstrated ability to recruit top Division I student-athletes.
Experience in practice planning, evaluating student-athletes, and managing travel schedules/itineraries.
Experience in fund raising efforts and events.
All QualificationsUnless otherwise required by an applicable collective bargaining agreement, all minimum, additional and desired qualifications are preferred, but qualifications, degrees, and/or experience deemed comparable and/or equivalent by Oakland University in its sole and exclusive discretion may be considered.
Position DetailsPosition PurposeThe Oakland University Assistant Softball Coach is responsible for assisting the head coach in developing a NCAA Division I softball program for student-athletes, within the rules and policies of The NCAA and Conference legislated guidelines. The assistant coach must also assist in the training and development of team/players on and off the field; liaison for academics and other departments on campus; Assist with travel arrangements and ordering of softball equipment.

An Assistant Coach works closely with the head coach throughout the season to help improve the skills of their players. Assistant Coaches help decide which drills to complete during practice and how to prepare for upcoming games. They also participate in game footage reviews to find areas of improvement.
Good assistant coaches anticipate what needs to be done and then get it done before being directed to do so; they also understand the shortcomings or limitations of the head coach and supplement in those areas.
Job description wise the two positions are similar and in fact they overlap quite a bit. In this way we can sort of think of the associate coach as a head or lead assistant coach, one that is understood to step in and lead the team at a moment's notice if required to.
Necessarily, a head coach has to look at the big picture and has an overall responsibility for the team/program. That inherently makes them a generalist. Assistant coaches, on the other hand, tend toward more specialization. Since they don't have to oversee everything, they can concentrate on certain things a bit more.
